Making of Rooms
This series of sculptures paired with short stop motion animation grew out of an effort to take a closer look at the objects in my own life. In preparation for a move across the country, I had begun to sort through and reduce our belongings.
Touching each object, evaluating its origin, usefulness, and sentimental value made me think about how objects can tell their own story. This series of animations were inspired by this process. The vignettes are not based on actual people nor is there any intention of reflecting a single person's story, but rather to touch on themes that effect many of us.
I began with sketches and then built the boxes that would contain each room to the same dimensions. The rooms are modular so that when a new room is finished it can become part of mosaic of stories that reflect the diversity of the human experience.
The use of 1/12th scale helped to expand the range of objects that I could include in each room. Some of the objects were bought, some found, and some I created myself. I am extremely grateful to my friend Kim Patishnock, who also crafted some of the objects and helped guide me through the animation process!
